Timber purchasing
We purchase birch logs year-round. Review the quality requirements and get in touch with us.
Quality requirements
Requirements for log quality by class
A comprehensive table of quality requirements is available as a PDF file
| Quality class | BC | BC | A | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Log diameter beneath the bark (cm) | ||||
| Log length + oversize | 2.7 m · 3.2 m · 4.8 m min oversize 6 cm, max oversize 30 cm | |||
| Minimum oversize is permitted if the log end surfaces are free of defects and need not be crosscut again. The maximum diameter of the thickest trunk section measured from the bark is 0.6 m. | ||||
| Sound knot | Allowed | Not allowed | ||
| Dry knots | d ≤ 20 mm | d ≤ 40 mm | Not allowed | |
| Rotten knots | d ≤ 20 mm | d ≤ 40 mm | Not allowed | |
| Intergrown knots | Allowed | |||
| Epicormic knot | Not allowed | Sound knot d ≤ 50 mm and up to 150 mm long; dry or rotten d ≤ 20 mm wide and 60 mm long | Sound knot d ≤ 80 mm and up to 240 mm long; dry or rotten d ≤ 40 mm and 120 mm long | Not allowed |
| A knot under 10mm is not considered a defect; the knot diameter is measured from the log surface perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the log | ||||
| Single curvature | The straightness of the entire log is assessed. Curvature is only allowed for module (1.3 or 1.6m) at the cut 20mm | 40 mm (assessed on module) | allowed single curvature of log d < 240mm is 50mm; on <br/>log d≥ 240mm allowed single curvature 60mm | 50 mm (assessed on module) |
| Compound curvature | Not allowed | Not allowed | Not allowed | Not allowed |
| A log is too warped if the line connecting log end centres runs outside the log and the module centreline runs beyond another module | ||||
| End shake, ring shake | End shakes: a) heart shake – from bark to bark excl. under 2mm; b) ring shake is allowed as a semicircle (180 degrees). Side shakes must not extend into the processing cylinder | |||
| Frost crack, lightning crack | Not allowed | |||
| Red heart, hard rot | Allowed | Allowed up to ⅓ of the diameter (must be located in the centre of the log end surface) | ||
| Burl | May not extend into trunk timber | |||
| Intact bark pocket (without rot) | Not allowed | Allowed on one side of a log with a length up to 60cm, depth up to 10% of the processing cylinder | Not allowed | Not allowed |
| Soot | Not allowed | Allowed on bark (fire damage must not extend into the processing cylinder); charred wood is not allowed | Not allowed | Not allowed |
| Foreign bodies, deadwood, soft rot, storage rot, discoloration | Not allowed | |||
| Branch stumps | Height up to 30 mm | Height up to 50 mm | Not allowed | |
| Root collar, fluting | Not allowed | Permitted up to 50 mm | Permitted up to 30 mm | |
| Mechanical damage and rupture | Not allowed | Length up to 60 cm, depth up to 10% of the processing cylinder | Not allowed | |
Important!
- We do not buy timber felled on non-forest land, in potential key habitats, in key habitats, in natural sacred sites, or in Natura 2000 forest habitats.
- Logs can be purchased from the places mentioned above if there is written confirmation from an expert that the felling activity will not harm the protected site.
- If there are any changes to your certificates, please let us know.
